Spiegelsaal in Clärchen's Ballhaus

Tod Saniert, if literally translated, means rehabilitated to death, that is... overly renovated. Happily, this is not the case in the mind-bogglingly beautiful Mirror Hall (or Spiegelsaal) in the Clärchen's Ballhaus in Berlin. The walls, ceilings and mirrors have been left untouched as a testament to the passage of time and evidence of war...

Master Bed in Blue

Two rather inviting bedrooms. The first sporting a collection of framed antique scrolls from Tokyo and a 19th-century taxidermy zebra...

The second has an 1840's bed (found at an estate sale) as it's centerpiece. The bed has been dressed with a 19th-century matelassé coverlet and an Amish horse blanket...

Frustration

In the chaos that is the nature of unpacking (epic move), I seem to have misplaced the tiniest of things, yet essential to survival (or sanity at least). I cannot find the camera chord, or battery charger. Scissors have sprouted legs or appear particularly talented at disappearing into the endless abyss of wrapping paper. However, headway is being made. 50-something boxes have been disposed of in the last three days, all sorted through during the Wimbledon Tennis finals. In the meantime - until I find that wretched chord - here are some placeholder images...

Our House at the end of our Street (Finale)

After months of cleaning, packing and prep, Settlement Day was finally upon us (Settlement Day, like D-Day, is being written in caps due to the monumentality of occasion in my head). We arrived at the empty house only to find that our names had been removed from the mailbox by the mailman. "Indignant" is an understatement, but then it dawned on me. "Let it go. Relinquish the reins. Cede. Surrender and yield" (battle terminology courtesy of the above-mentioned D-Day analogy).

So hard.

I had a tome planned for the final posting on this particular house... but it became so maudlin, sentimental, I thought I would spare you. However, I do feel like I have lost a limb.

It has been said that...

You never really leave a place or person you love, part of them you take with you, leaving a part of yourself behind.

Our House at the end of our Street (VII)

My poor long-suffering desk literally groans with the weight of knickknacks and baubles. So much for me ever doing any productive work there. Instead, my computer is constantly on my lap contributing to varicose veins and lack of circulation. And don't even mention the dusting...

I must say I am feeling particularly nostalgic and sentimental about the house, as it is on the market. So, snapped these photographs (in a frenzy, lest I forget an inch) over the weekend in varying degrees of light...

Coming up for Air (Let the Room Breathe)...

I must admit that most of my cuckoo-ness (this past weekend) was self-induced. After offloading the burden of superfluous furniture, there were several 'holes' left in the decor (and dusty reminders of where each piece had once stood). So scramble did I, to rearrange. Oh, and also scrubbed my fingers to a nub. Carol Burnett-style. Now, the house looks so entirely different... the drawing room has nothing in it, besides one settee. But I am taking my cue from this particular Appartement Haussmannien in Paris... if the house has spectacular bones, one needs very little else. Less is so much more.
