For those with more ‘dash than cash’…
We stayed at The Jane Hotel in the West Village this weekend, and what a visual feast it was. If you’re into Taxidermy (check), faded grandeur (check) and general bohemia (triple check), then this would be your stomping ground. Originally built as a seaman’s hotel (and hosting survivors of the Titanic until the end of the American enquiry into the ship’s sinking), it was transformed into its current incarnation in 2008 by the same owners as The Maritime and The Bowery Hotel. The wonderful Morrocan-flavored Café Gitane is right in the hotel, and the authenticity of the décor transports one to Marrakesh with a hint of Cuba or Brazil (they have avocado toast, people!). The crowd is painfully hip accompanied by a you-are-rather-lucky-to-be-in-the-same-room-as-me attitude. I heard the hotel interior described as the type of living room where The Royal Tenenbaums would host their family reunion. Perfect.
