Searching for Sugar Man
Just more than a year ago, my husband and I were at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah for the première of Searching for Sugar Man... I blogged about it here and here. The documentary (directed by Malik Bendjelloul) is based on my husband, Craig Bartholomew-Strydom's 1997 article about 'finding' musician Sixto Rodriguez. So much has happened since that snowy January. The film has just won the Oscar for Best Documentary at the Academy Awards. We are beside ourselves...
And here is Craig holding the majestic statuette. "Heavy as a dumbbell" is how he described it! What a whirlwind...
Read an amusing Baltimore Sun article about his experience here...

From the home of Federico de Vera and Randy Saunders: a collection of De Vera–designed necklaces (made of gold, coral, and a variety of found trinkets) hang from a yellow Eames wall hook and a wooden hand carved in nineteenth-century Germany...

Ett Hem Hotel
British interior designer, Ilse Crawford of Studioilse, and Swedish owner, Jeanette Mix, have recently renovated a former 1910 Swedish residence (originally designed by architect Fredrik Dahlberg), converting it into a beautiful hotel, (which feels more like a private luxury home than a place of public perambulation)...

Wall & Decò
Just a small sample of the seriously swoon-worthy wallpaper designed by the Italian-based, Wall & Decò. Modern, fresh and innovative. Certainly brings background into the foreground...

Zeche Zollverein
Zeche Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen (Ruhr area) is considered one of the most important landmarks in Germany. Founded in 1847, it survived the wars. Shaft XII, built in the Bauhaus style, is considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful industrial buildings...

S.O.S.
Can there be anything worse than arriving at an airport and being told (with a sense of relish) that your plane is leaving from a different airport altogether? This happened to me on Sunday at the crack of dawn. And to add insult to injury, the man behind the counter, upon looking at my ID photograph, snidely remarked on my penchant for red lipstick. Furthermore, all further flights were fully booked. There were no rental cars either thanks to the African Cup of Nations. Thank goodness for friends, who responded at the drop of a trilby to our SOS. Mia Widlake, from No. 19, and family not only fetched us but fed us a spectacular meal in their exquisite Johannesburg home. I snapped a few pics... which would never do justice to the absolute styling genius that is my partner in Brimfield (and any other shopping) crime...
