Pennsylvania Station, NYC

"Until the first blow fell, no one was convinced that Penn Station really would be demolished, or that New York would permit this monumental act of vandalism against one of the largest and finest landmarks of its age of Roman elegance." (New York Times)

What a complete tragedy that this marvelous neo-classical structure was leveled, to make space ultimately for Madison Square Garden. To have lost a station as majestic as this, is deplorable...

  2. I have an old shot of Penn Station as my desktop wallpaper at the office.

  3. I am a recovering New Yorker (I now live just outside Baltimore). Unfortunately I am too young to have been able to see this beautiful space first-hand. It's hard to believe that it was tossed away so carelessly. It would be like razing Grand Central Station to build a Costco. I do like Madison Square Garden but they could have placed it in another part of the city that needed the extra boost to its local economy.
You have a beautiful blog. I am grateful to Meg at Pigtown Design for sharing your link.

  4. Thank you so much, Jill. I so appreciate your comments. I agree - cannot bear the wholesale destruction of historic materials and properties. Have a wonderful day! Phil
